This 5 days trekking tour takes you through the stunning landscape features of the Ngorongoro crater highlands. During this trekking you will hike through grassy plains and mountainous countryside, thick mountain forest and Savannah landscape o the Great East Africa Rift Valley. Despite of the unique landscape and seeing wild animals, this trek allows insight into the daily activities of the fascinating culture of the Maasai people.
Throughout your trekking you will load the Maasai donkeys for your luggage, all camping equipments and food.
In the morning you will be picked up from your Hotel and drive the tarmac road through the village of Mto wa Mbu with the escarpment of the Great East Africa Rift Valley. From a view point above the town you see the Maasai plains stretched to the horizon with the alkaline Lake Manyara down below. A short drive furthermore and you will reach the gate of Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The adventure continuous along the scenery crater road, to the Maasai Village of Nainokanoka. While your camp is being set up a short hike to the rim of Ormoti crater during the afternoon. There is also a possibility of visiting small waterfall along the way. Dinner will be prepared at the camp. Depending of the season of the year it might be cold, the camp stand at the Altitude of 2,650m.
The trekking begins after the breakfast where you will pass many traditional Maasai Bomas and cattle heads. Soon you might also witness the wildness such as Thompsons and Grinds gazelles, Zebras, hungry Jackals and the wild bests. Not far behind and majestic Eagles observing the .situation. After approximately 16 km you will reach a camp site not far from the Maasai village of Bulati.
After your breakfast the trekking goes up a hill from where you have last panoramic view of the grass plains below. The trekking continous up and down through the bush landscape which finally opens up to the World unique Active Volcano of Oldonyo Lengai. The trekking gives you great views of the Majestic Volcano, together with the impressive Empakai crater before reaching the camp site for your night. You will have the exploration the crater and on a good maintained pass to Lake Empakai through inside the crater. The alkaline Soda Lake Empakai gives is an important food source for Flamingos that can be seen throughout the year. During the night you might hear the flamingos call as they fly back to their breeding nest at Lake Natron and Manyara.
As usual the entire equipment will be transported by donkeys. During breakfast the Maasai will start to pack their donkeys ready for the hike to the Maasai Village of Nayobi, following good pass, the village s well as Oldonyo Lengai an active Volcano can be seen from a distance. After your lunch in Nayobi you will leave the Ngorongoro Conservation Area descending to acacia camp. The landscape here is dry and warmer. At night your camp will be set up at amongst acaci forest.
This will be the last stage of the trekking which not so long and it goes mainly downhill. The highlights of the trek are the great views of Oldonyo Lengai, Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The rugged countryside looks almost realy covered by the grey ash of last eruption in 2007. The treks descend down into the dry and hot rift valley, where the volcanic ash can be seen up close. Around lunch time you will reach the waiting vehicle will pick up you to the next destination.
